Total Aflatoxin
Aflatoxins are a group of naturally occurring toxins produced by certain types of fungi, including Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. These toxins can contaminate various types of food, including peanuts, tree nuts, corn, and some spices. Aflatoxins are known to be carcinogenic and can have other negative health effects on humans and animals.
"Aflatoxin total" is a term used to refer to the sum of all the different types of aflatoxins i.e. B1, B2, G1, G2 that may be present in a food sample. This value is often reported in micrograms per kilogram (μg/kg) or parts per billion (ppb) and is used to assess the safety of a food product for human or animal consumption. The maximum allowable levels of aflatoxin total vary by country and type of food and may be regulated by government agencies to protect public health. Regular monitoring of food products for aflatoxin contamination is important to ensure food safety and prevent exposure to these harmful toxins.
