Aflatoxin B1
Aflatoxin B1 is a type of aflatoxin that is produced by the fungi Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxin B1 is a potent carcinogen and is known to be harmful to humans and animals when ingested in high quantities.
Aflatoxin B1 is commonly found in certain foods, such as peanuts, corn, and tree nuts, which have been contaminated with the fungi that produce this toxin. When consumed in high levels, aflatoxin B1 can cause liver damage, immune suppression, and an increased risk of liver cancer.
Exposure to aflatoxin B1 can occur through ingestion of contaminated food products, and long-term exposure can lead to liver damage and an increased risk of liver cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) has established guidelines for maximum allowable levels of aflatoxin B1 in food products to minimize exposure and protect public health. Regular monitoring and testing of food products for aflatoxin B1 contamination is important to ensure food safety and prevent health problems associated with exposure to this toxin.
